Any amount of days in a carry on is tough and four days in a carry on is no exception. Everyone has essential items they require and sometimes a carry on handles those items alone without adding anything else you need to travel. As you collect everything you want to bring with you realize that perhaps you have a lot of crap.
After travelling through Cuba with just a carry on I feel like I take a lot more consideration when packing. Even if just for a weekend, I still over pack sometimes but I feel like that has come down a lot in comparison to what I used to pack.
The Bag and Packing Compartments
It definitely helps when you have a bag you like to use. Buy something you like because then you will be more likely to use it and be seen with it.
My husband and I have invested in Tom Bihn A3o bags and aside for sometimes wanting some wheels, they have been awesome. There are enough little compartments that organization is a breeze.
One thing to make sure of before you decided on your next favourite bag is that it fits the carry on size requirements for airlines. I fly WestJet and their carry on size is 53 cm x 23 cm x 38 cm (21 in. x 9 in. x 15 in.) and personal item which must fit under the seat in front of you 41 cm x 15 cm x 33 cm (16 in. x 6 in. x 13 in.)
Finally organization is key to packing light. Packing cubes and shirt folders make getting the most into a bag possible. I am more prone towards the packing cubes, I have one that I try to get most of my clothes into and then stuff other things around the cube. Robert prefers the folders for keeping his clothes neatly folded and wrinkle free.

- Cell phone
Toiletries : The Bare Necessities
This is the hardest part aside from clothes. What not to bring. Toiletries are one of those things that whether your going for four days in a carry on or 2 weeks you need the same stuff. The trick is getting products that do double duty or finding more compact versions if possible. Also try to avoid liquids so that you stay within the 1 litre bag limits.
I divide y stuff into “dry” and “wet” products because of the airline restrictions.
For dry items I packed:
- Hair Brush
- Tooth Brush
- Braces Brushes
- Hair Elastics
- Eye Liner
- Eye Lash Curler
- Light pads and a Diva Cup (a girl can never be too prepared you know?)
***Not shown in picture, but were added: deodorant, chap stick
For my “wet” toiletries I have:
- Face wash
- Day moisturizer
- Night Moisturizer
- Tinted moisturizer
- Tooth Paste
- Shampoo & conditioner
***Not shown in picture, but were added: travel size hand sanitizer spray & travel size mouth freshener
